About Canopy Group USA

Who We Are

We create strong, welcoming, and sustainable farmers' markets across Southern Maryland.

We bring together the people, partnerships, and operational systems needed to help markets thrive. Working with municipalities, community organizations, vendors, and local partners, we plan and manage farmers' markets and community events that are well-organized, accessible, and responsive to the communities they serve.

We support entrepreneurs and small businesses.

We recognize that farmers' markets can serve as important platforms for small-business growth—they're small-business incubators. By connecting local entrepreneurs with customers and providing opportunities to build skills, strengthen outreach, and develop their businesses, we help create pathways for farmers, artists, craftspeople, cooks, chefs, and other local entrepreneurs to grow.

We focus on food sovereignty accessibility, and connection.

Our markets are designed to be welcoming and accessible to everyone, with free admission and parking. Through collaboration with community partners, we work to expand participation, improve food access, and create vibrant spaces where local businesses and communities can connect.

The Need

What is a "food desert"?

A food desert is an area where residents have limited access to affordable, nutritious food—particularly fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy options.

The term is commonly used to describe communities where people may face barriers such as:

  • Few or no nearby grocery stores or fresh-food retailers
  • Long distances to stores offering healthy food
  • Limited public transportation or other transportation challenges
  • High food prices or limited household resources

What does "food sovereignty" mean?

Food sovereignty is the principle that people and communities should have the power to shape and control their own food systems.

It goes beyond simply having access to food. Food sovereignty considers who grows food, how it is produced, who has access to it, and who makes decisions about the food system.

This is what we are all about.

Canopy Group was founded to support local producers and strengthen access to safe, fresh, locally grown and prepared food—particularly in communities where access may be limited or inconsistent.

What We Do

We help the our local community through markets and events.

We support local farmers and agricultural producers, food makers, artists and craftspeople, prepared food vendors, food trucks, and the families and community members who make each market possible.

We handle the operational details.

A successful market requires more than a location and a schedule. It takes thoughtful planning, strong communication, consistent management, and a commitment to creating an equitable and welcoming experience for everyone involved. We bring all these elements together.

By managing the operational details, Canopy Group allows vendors to focus on what they do best—growing, creating, preparing, and selling their goods—while we focus on building the systems and connections that help the entire market community succeed.

 Our work includes...

  • Market planning and on-site management
  • Vendor recruitment, coordination, and communication
  • Market promotion and community outreach
  • Support for EBT and other food-access initiatives, where available
  • Clear and transparent processes for vendors and partners
  • Small-business support, training, and practical guidance
  • Community engagement and partnership development

Our Approach

Our work is hands-on, collaborative, and community-centered.
